Internship |
Summary: |
This course provides a practicum in selected school media centers under the supervision of university staff and a certified media specialist at the school site. Students are required to spend at least 100 hours in media centers and 20 in reflection about their experiences. |
Reflection: |
My internship allowed me to establish connections with media specialists at my school and others at different grade levels. During my internship I was able to teach students information literacy through my daily interactions in the media center. I was also able to help teachers while I was in the media center, by telling them about my success with the I-Search, teaching them how to use new technology, and introducing them to new online resources. |
Self Assessment: |
I loved my internship! My mentor was wonderful. She is what I would consider a model media specialist. She exhibited almost everything that we discussed in class and read about in Information Power. I wish I could have spent more time in different schools. I think that would have given me even more experience to draw from when I work in my own media center. |

Program Development and Evaluation Plan |
Summary:
|
The Program Development and Evaluation Plan is the basic plan for a library media program. The PDEP contains policies, procedures, and principles that a media specialist will use to operate the media center program. |
Reflection: |
Creating the PDEP forced me to think about the many aspects of administering a school library program. I had to develop things such as a mission statement, objectives, and personnel job descriptions. I also had to create a hypothetical budget that aligned with my objectives. The budget and objectives gave me practice so that I will be better able to properly manage program resources when I have my own media center. The PDEP also helped me think about how I would assess my progress toward my objectives each year. I set in place a plan that would enable both me, media center personnel, and the media committee to properly assess and evaluate what the media center is doing. The development of a plan like this will enable me to keep myself accountable when I have my own media center. It has given me an understanding of how to set goals and determine whether or not they have been reached. |
Self Assessment: |
I was very pleased with the PDEP. If I could change something, it would probably be to shorten it or create an abbreviated version for administrators. I would like administration to know what is in the PDEP, but I know that they may not have the time to read the original. |
